Grounds of Garema: Poppy's pop-up park design to become reality in Canberra

The eight-year-old combined her hobbies and entered a design for Canberra's inaugural micro parks competition with the help of her parents Andrew and Louise.

"I like parks and I like everyone to play on them and have fun," the year two student said.

The family of three sat around the dinning table and brainstormed ideas about the perfect park.

"I made some popcorn and then we sat around and talked about what we wanted and then I'd sketched what Poppy was drawing on hers," Mr Henderson said.

"Louise really likes parks - we wanted something that was really inclusive, we didn't want anyone to feel intimidated by the space."

The Grounds of Garema takes form of a micro amphitheatre decked out with a community piano, picnic tables, umbrellas with a purple flower taking centre stage.

The competition is based off the success of a pop-up park social experiment, which ran for eight days at Garema Place in October last year.

Canberrans submitted 14 design ideas for a transportable micro park for Garema Place after Transport and City Services Minister Meegan Fitzharris made the call-out in July.

"Grounds of Garema will create a vibrant and attractive space with spots for cosy conversations, resting, playing, listening and learning," Ms Fitzharris said.

"Like the Backyard Experiment last year, the Henderson's design will help to activate Garema Place bringing colour and energy to one of the city's most visited destinations."

Poppy's pop-up park will be constructed by a landscape architect, in consultation with the family.

Construction of the park will begin in November and be finished by summer. It will be installed for two months.
