That's the power of a good song - it doesn't matter where you are, it can transport you back to where and who you were when you first heard it.
Maybe that's the reason why Grinspoon's Guide To Better Living tour has produced a string of sellout shows in RSLs, uni bars, city halls and pubs across Australia.
Now Grinners are finally coming back to Canberra.
Frontman Phil Jamieson, guitarist Pat Davern, bassist Joe Hanson and drummer Kristian Hopes have reunited for their first real tour since 2013, when the band went on an indefinite hiatus (they briefly got back together to play a couple of shows with Cold Chisel in 2015).
The date they will play in Canberra is 20 years to the day their debut album of the same name dropped.
And like me, Jamieson, 40, admits listening to those songs takes him away.
The singer-guitarist is not one to be nostalgic for the sake of it - "I find that kind of revivalist bullshit to be a little bit annoying," he says - but there is something "special" about playing songs he wrote in 1997 with the same blokes he's been playing with since he was 18.
"It reminds me of being a ratty teenager as well," Jamieson says.
Grinspoon formed in Lismore in 1995 and released their first studio album two years later.
1997 was a crowded time in the Australian alternative music scene.
Bands like Silverchair, Jebediah, the Living End and Grinspoon were helping to carve out a new Australian sound, one which you can still hear on the radio waves today.
"It was a bit of a perfect storm in some ways and we were in the middle of it, with a bunch of other amazing Australian artists who for better or for worse were competing," Jamieson says.
"Not viciously but we were all trying our best to be great and we were a part of that and I think people hold a lot of affection for those times, maybe it takes them back a bit. It takes me back a bit as well."
Reviving great rabble raisers like Rail Rider and Post Enebriated Anxiety two decades on must be an exhausting, especially for Jamieson, who's recently appeared in American Idiot The Musical, as St Jimmy.
But Jamieson says he is enjoying it and reckons the crowd is too.
"Some of its challenging, I'll be honest. Some of the songs have their moments where they're difficult [but] it's fun, invigorating, I get a real kick out of it," he says.
Some of the album's subject matter has taken on a new lens in the intervening decades though.
"There's songs like Balding Matters, [which] is a really funny song to be writing when you're 19. I don't think hair loss would have been particularly on my mind as a teenager, I just find it funny," Jamieson says.
And as the band has evolved over its 22-history, so too have its fans.
This tour has opened up their music to a much younger audience too.
"It changes. Each show is different, for example the Enmore Theatre and Adelaide Entertainment Centre, parents were coming out with their kids, you'd see 30-somethings with their 10-year-olds," Jamieson says.
"The kids were just going crazy, like circle pits, stage diving, crowd surfing.
"In Adelaide, there was a 10-year-old in the front row, I think it was his first show, he was like oh my god, just looking up going 'this is really cool'.
"His dad was right behind him on the barrier so you could tell he was protecting him from the mayhem that was ensuing behind him, people were very excited, coming over the barrier, crowd surfing."
However its unlikely this latest tour or new wave of fans will lead to another album - at least for now.
"As far as Grinspoon goes, I think we're all going to have a bit of a rest," Jamieson says.
"As I said before about nostalgia, I don't particularly want to milk this.
"It was special for a reason and the reason was because we didn't play for four years or so and it would be disingenuous for us to come back out and say 'hey! We're back again!' I'm a bit cautious of doing that.
"If we ever do something again I want to make it special, if not more so, so we'll put on the brakes for a bit, put away our guitars and just enjoy a bit of home time and family time."
