Grumpy cat cafe - Star Zanda awaits opening

The popularity of having a coffee with a kitty has apparently skyrocketed across the nation since the first cat cafe opened in Melbourne in July.

The concept has struck a chord among the well-educated folk of Canberra, with an inundation of people asking for jobs and expressing their excitement.

And it hasn't even opened yet.

Plans are afoot for the cafe to open mid next year.

The management team, who wish to remain anonymous for the moment, happen to be the sisters who own larger-than-life cat Zanda - a star of social media.

"It's something Canberra is missing and the response has been overwhelming so far," the pair said.

"It's something unique and different, they're popping up all over the world."

"It will be a place to go and interact with animals and that's good therapy for everyone."

The Canberra Cat Cafe will be located as close to the inner-city as possible, to allow for accessibility.

Although patrons will be able to drink coffee or pet a cat, doing both simultaneously won't be possible.

The cats will be contained behind glass and visitors will pay for the privilege of petting the animals.

Despite being in its infancy, the management team are confident they have the community support to get the cafe up and running.

"We want to make it something that is quite unique to Canberra," she said.

We're going to go with it being like a tourist attraction … Zanda will be the star attraction."
