Gun fired during 'random' Braddon attack

A group of men had tried to force their way into the Allawah Court apartment, near the Canberra Centre in Braddon.

When the occupant barricaded the door, one of the men allegedly fired a shot through the door just below kneecap level, slightly injuring the victim's left foot.

Police were still hunting those responsible for the alleged shooting and home invasion late yesterday.

The victim, Albert Ferguson, told The Canberra Times that he had no idea why the men tried to force their way through his door, and said the attack might have been a case of ''mistaken identity''.

ACT Policing detectives are describing the incident as ''random and isolated''.

Mr Ferguson said he had been woken abruptly to a knocking at his door about 5.45am.

He opened his door slightly, and it was shoved from the outside.

''I answered the door and I had a shotgun in my face,'' Mr Ferguson said.

''So I tried to push the door closed back in, busted my shoulder … and there were two guys, they had the gun at me,'' he said.

''I pushed the door closed, and my friend woke up a minute later and came to give me a hand. As soon as I shut the door, the gun went 'bang' … it got me on top of my left foot.''

The offenders fled on foot shortly afterward, police say.

Mr Ferguson, who said he had lived at the Allawah Court apartments for 12 years, suffered bruising to his foot, hurt his shoulder and was in shock, but was otherwise unharmed. A police spokesman said the attack was ''concerning'', and police were still hunting for the alleged offenders.

''Detectives are interested in speaking to three to five males, who were seen in the vicinity of the unit complex at the time,'' he said. Police said one man was described as between 173cm to 183cm tall and about 60kg. He was wearing a cap and balaclava.

A second person was between 168cm to 173cm tall. He was wearing a white baseball cap and black bandanna across his face.
