According to figures from the ACT Education directorate – eight government schools dotted across the booming suburbs of Amaroo, Nicholls, Gungahlin, Franklin, Palmerston, Harrison, Bonner and Ngunnawal – have enrolled an extra 2031 students since 2013.

This is a growth rate of nearly 40 per cent taking total student numbers in the government system to 7345, according to the February Census. Private schools are also near or at capacity.

Parents such as Lisa Ramsay are feeling anxious that by the time their children are ready to enrol at primary school, there may be no room.

Ms Ramsay has both her seven-year-old son Jacob, and her six-year-old daughter Heidi at the Franklin Early Learning Centre.

They love the school dearly, but it caters only until Year 2.

Next year Jacob will need to find a place at his local school Harrison Primary.

While the family is guaranteed a place under directorate Priority Enrolment Area policies, Ms Ramsay says many parents are fearful the school is close to capacity and their children will have to travel further to Palmerston District Primary School.

"It is just crazy out here in terms of how many school aged children are in the suburbs. Originally we tried to enrol in Harrison but were told to go to Franklin, and now we need to move again and we feel the pathways are not clear for us…It is a bit stressful."

Ms Ramsay is one part of a group of concerned parents who want the government to consider extending Franklin, which opened in 2013, from Year 2 to Year 6.

A directorate spokesman said that Harrison's junior school had a "flexible classroom allowance" meaning it could be expanded to fit another hundred students if necessary. "The directorate is monitoring enrolment trends."

But Ms Ramsay said if current enrolment trends continued, she would be just as concerned that her daughter would find a place the year after next.

"The worst outcome would be if they had to be split up at school."

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Gungahlin is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. The 57 per cent growth of Crace in 2013-14 has given it the title of Australia's fastest growing suburb, while Gungahlin was responsible for 71 per cent of total growth in the ACT.

An Education directorate spokesman said that enrolments across Gungahlin were monitored closely through the February and August census to ensure that "children living within the school's Priority Enrolment Area can be accommodated."

This applied to all children currently enrolled at the Franklin early childhood school.

The spokesman said a range of methods could allow schools to respond to short and medium term enrolment pressure. These included reducing out-of-area enrolments, making programs more flexible, re-purposing spaces, reducing the priority enrolment area, adding transportables, adding modular buildings, or expanding the school.

If demographic pressures were strong enough, the directorate would consider planning another new school for the region.

Private schools were experiencing the same enrolment pressures as public schools.

Burgmann Anglican School in Gungahlin is at capacity at 1530 students and has a healthy waiting list.

According to the Catholic Education Office, Good Shepherd Primary in Amaroo is already at capacity of 620 students.

Holy Spirit at Nicholls has enrolled 100 students over the past two years taking its size to 560. It can, however, take up to 650 with a new preschool in the planning processes for completion at the end of 2015.

The new preschool will be able to ease some of the pressure on Mother Theresa Primary at Harrison which opened in 2010 with 54 students, but now has 545 and is at capacity up to Year 3 with a waiting list for its preschool.

John Paul College, which opened in 2013 with 100 students, is now at 330 and is expected to reach capacity of 1200 students by 2018.

Currently, no government school had technically reached capacity in Gungahlin with exception of the College, which has a capacity of 969 and has 967 students. The college was using flexible time-tabling to extend the school day.

Franklin had a capacity of 189 and was currently at 113, while Ngunnawal Primary had a capacity of 600 and an enrolment of 551.

All of the primary schools had capacity for a further 75-100 students under "flexible classroom allowance".
