As a horse driver with the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade Private Turner spent three years on the battle field during World War I, but according to his daughter the Battle of Beersheba was one of the worst battles he ever fought in.
"He would have been 19 at Beersheba," his daughter Peggy Slape said. "My father was a man who didn't talk about it much because it was a horrific time in his life."
On Tuesday the Australian Army held a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the battle at the Desert Mountain Corps Memorial on Anzac Parade.
Members of the Royal Australian Artillery Corps marched up Anzac Parade after the official army proceedings to take part in the Last Post at the Australian War Memorial, where the service of Sergeant Colin Brodie Bull, who died at Beersheba, was commemorated.
Mrs Slape, and Private Turner's granddaughter, Deb Zilm, travelled to the ceremony from South Australia with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment from Naracoorte.
She said ceremonies like Tuesday's were massive for her and that she got emotional just thinking about her father and his time at war.
The Battle of Beersheba, fought on 31 October 1917, saw Australian Light Horse Brigades brandish their bayonets as swords to break through a Turkish Defensive Line after travelling two days through the desert without water.
"He said it was one of the worst battles he fought in - I think that was because the horses were so thirsty with no water for so long, and [the soldiers] wouldn't have had much water either," Mrs Slape said.
"It was just something they had to do, and being young men they did what young men do I suppose."
Along with others from the Naracoorte Regime, Mrs Slape's husband was representing the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Tuesday's ceremony. The South Australians plan to return home on Wednesday, with two stops on the way for the horses.
Ms Zilm said being able to join with the Brigade meant she and her mother could participate in more services like the Beersheba ceremony.
"We get to do Anzac Day and Remembrance Day and all sorts of things," she said.
