Hundreds of trucks and motorbikes raise more than $200K through Canberra's cancer convoy

Canberrans could have been forgiven for thinking they were in Sydney when 400 trucks and 300 motorcycles clogged up the city's roads on Sunday. But the disruption was for a good cause, as it raised more than $200,000 for Canberra and Queanbeyan cancer patients.

The Convoy for Cancer Families took roughly three hours to travel through the Monaro Highway, Morshead Drive, Parkes Way and Gungahlin Drive, before finishing at Exhibition Park.

Melissa Gardiner from the The Cancer Support Group ACT Eden Monaro's Own said the annual convoy provided financial support for vulnerable families.

"We are one of the only groups in Canberra that focus on financial support, rather than research, " she said.

"When you are diagnosed with cancer you have to give up work to start your treatment. If it is a child often both their mum and dad have to give up work."

This year a record number of trucks wanted to move wheels to help cancer patients move mountains, with interest far exceeding the number of trucks allowed on the road.

While receiving a few complaints about traffic delays caused by the convoy, Ms Gardiner said most people were understanding.

"At the end of the day they know we are raising money by something that everyone has been touched by, whether themselves, a friend or a family member," she said.
