John Knox, the managing director of Icon Water has been named as the new chief executive of ActewAGL, after its former head Michael Costello announced his retirement in May after 10 years in the role.
Mr Knox, who was previously chief financial officer for ActewAGL, will come into the role on November 12.
Mr Costello will leave the role on October 12, with general manager Tania Hutchinson acting in the role before Mr Knox comes in.
The incoming chief executive said he was looking forward to taking on the new position.
"The customer will continue to be my primary focus as I lead ActewAGL through the varied challenges facing the energy sector to ensure we continue to offer the best possible prices, services and reliability," Mr Knox said.
"I consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to lead ActewAGL through an exciting new phase in which we will drive the agenda in harnessing innovative technologies and delivery methods."
The leadership change comes as the energy provider earlier this year passed on the maximum allowable price rise to power prices, with residents facing a $299 increase to their annual bills.
ActewAGL also confirmed it was reviewing job numbers in its brand, communications and corporate affairs branch back in June.
Mr Knox's last day at Icon Water will be on October 19, with general manager Ray Hezkial to take over as acting chief executive.
A national search will begin for a permanent replacement in February 2019.
ActewAGL's joint venture chair Paul Adams said the new chief executive would bring extensive knowledge of the business to the role.
"His long-term vision will ultimately benefit the Canberra community through innovative products and services," Mr Adams said.
"Mr Knox's energetic leadership style, commercial experience and passion for our customers and community will support the strategic objectives of ActewAGL."
Mr Adams also paid tribute to outgoing chief executive Michael Costello.
"Under Michael's stewardship, ActewAGL has achieved outstanding customer satisfaction ratings year-on-year and ensured it has remained the most reliable and sustainable energy and gas business in Australia," he said.
"He has replaced legacy information and operational technology systems to ensure the business is equipped for the future."
Icon Water chief Wendy Caird said Mr Knox would be a big loss to the utility company.
"I am pleased that he is not lost to the Canberra community and I know that he will be a great asset to ActewAGL."
