Items pile up at world's biggest garage sale on October 24

At last year's Garage Sale Trail, 2.9 million pre-loved items were sold from more than 8000 garage sales.

Now in its fifth year, the event will feature more than 10,000 garage sales across Australia.

Emma Keightley of Weston Creek, is among the sellers.

Her family is packing up to travel the world and wants to reduce the storage pile.

"We will be packing up our house and renting it out, so we have been working our way through our stuff identifying items we don't want to store," she said.

"I am considering donating half the sale proceeds to a charity somewhere on our trip – probably in Cambodia – the registration website gave me that idea, I just need to check what my husband thinks of that plan and decide on a charity."

Community groups are also planning garage sales for the weekend, like the North Belconnen Giant Community Garage Sale at North Belconnen Baptist Church.

This sale will feature more than 60 stalls, a jumping castle, face painting, live music and a sausage sizzle.

The Garage Sale Trail was founded in 2010 by Andrew Valder and Darryl Nichols in a bid to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Mr Valder said a garage sale was a way to encourage people to reuse unwanted items and put a value on the world's resources.
