And our chief Christmas Tree Trend Adviser - Leanne de Smet - should know.
She's the "Head Elf" at Bredbo Christmas Barn and literally travels the world sourcing the best decorations and trends to bring home to Canberrans.
Last week she was in China at the Canton Fair, the biggest Christmas fair in the world with over 24,000 stalls and 200,000 people in attendance every day.
According to Leanne, Christmas 2016 is all about grey, silver and white with a touch of natural texture like raw linen and hessian. In terms of characters, you can't go past vintage elves.
"The traditional Christmas reds and greens are always hugely popular," Leanne said.
"But we put the sections of the barn together so you can buy Christmas in any colour.
"I always say if you can see the actual tree it's not decorated enough," she laughed.
Thousands of Christmas-obsessed people from across Australia make the pilgrimage to Bredbo each year to visit Leanne's Christmas Barn, and this year she will have thousands of new trinkets from as far afield as the US and Germany to greet them. Included in the new range are a series of tiny vintage caravans, Disney characters and even bone-shaped decorations just for dogs.
Leanne said her trip to China last week was to source decorations for Christmas 2017, which will be all about the many shades of grey complemented by rich burgundy.
