Jackie French gardening: Tickling the soil for Christmas

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and many sisters), are now tucking in to fat white asparagus stems, thinner sweet green asparagus as well as succulent purple ones; munching new red lettuces, plucking round firm zucchinis, seeing the green tomatoes swell and the cucumbers lengthen as their flowers drop off.
