I have just had a letter from gentleman farmer and gardener, Thomas Tusser, with extremely good advice – which is not surprising as Thomas Tusser wrote one of the first gardening books in English, A Hundreth Good Pointes of Husbandrie, a book of wise, rhyming couplets about the growing year. Although Thomas Tusser moved farms and jobs many times, partly due to the plague, he lived a thrifty profitable life and died well off – and, I suspect, extremely well fed.
