It was alleged by the Crown that Andrew John Connors and Curtin man Alexander Scott Hagan agreed to transport the drug ice to Melbourne in Hagan's car, where the car and its driver would be met by Connors.

After leaving Hagan's home on October 23, 2014, the car never made it past the ACT border.

Hagan pleaded guilty to his role in the crime, which included packing the car and arranging a driver, and was sentenced in November to more than 13 years jail.

Last Friday, Justice Richard Refshauge found Connors, who was living in Melbourne, not guilty of trafficking, after the 38-year-old elected to be tried by judge alone.

Connors faced trial in the ACT Supreme Court in June, represented by prominent barrister Winston Terracini, SC, and a second barrister Duncan Berents, who were instructed by Kamy Saeedi Law's James Maher.

The prosecution case against Connors was largely circumstantial, Justice Refshauge said in his decision.

The Crown had relied on a list of things, of which it said the only inference that could be drawn was Connors had an agreement with Hagan to traffick the ice.

These things included, among others, Connors' friendship with Hagan, Connors' travel to Canberra on October 22, and then return to Melbourne on October 23, the fact he had left a rental car for Hagan while Hagan's was being used to deliver drugs, and also secret recordings which had Hagan referring to Connors as the one who would meet the driver in Melbourne.

But Mr Terracini pointed the judge to other circumstances, including that Connors' parents lived in Canberra and that he and Hagan were long-time friends.

Justice Refshauge found that the construction of Connors' house in Canberra - consistent with him booking a flight and hiring a car in his own name - was the purpose of his visit on October 22, 2014, and not the arrangement of delivering drugs.

That Hagan had referred to Connors as the person who would meet the driver was not proof Connors was going to do that or had approved the arrangement, Justice Refshauge said.

There was no evidence Connors knew of the driver's involvement in the delivery of the drugs, Justice Refshauge said. And there was evidence Connors had not left his Melbourne home in time to meet the driver, and yet did not know the driver had been arrested and that the car had never arrived in Melbourne.

Justice Refshauge said the Crown's circumstantial case was strong. But in a 50-page judgement handed down on Friday, the ACT Supreme Court judge said he was not satisfied that it excluded "any rational explanation consistent with the innocence of Mr Connors."

He handed down a verdict of not guilty.
