Lying in an intensive care ward she knew this was it. Doctors had a healthy heart ready and in a matter of hours that new ticker would mean she would live to see her son Harvey grow up.

Kerrie was part of a packed crowd at Manuka Oval on Saturday as a sell-out of 14,274 crammed into the ground to watch the GWS Giants beat the Melbourne Demons 14.13 (97) to 10.2 (62).

The Giants sent a message to their AFL premiership rivals with the easy win as star recruit Brett Deledio got the perfect debut for his new club.

But the good vibes of a Giants win didn't end on the field, with Kerrie's story shown on the big screen to the capacity crowd as part of DonateLife week.

At 29, a diagnosis of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia, or ARVD, changed everything.

Her heart soon became weaker and sicker. She was taking in excess of 30 pills a day to manage heart failure and the knock-on effect this had on her other organs.

"In the last year or so I was virtually house bound," she said. "I couldn't breath properly anymore, I couldn't do stairs, even walking around the supermarket was too much."

After 11 months on a waiting list she underwent heart transplant surgery at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.

Her comparatively "limitless" life is now a huge thrill. Her son Harvey, born after her diagnosis, had always known her as being sick.

"As a mum it was heart-wrenching. I'd always wanted to join in and kick the footy and do things with him but physically just couldn't," she said.

"But now I do. We get down and kick a footy and ride bikes and do all sorts of things and it is awesome."

In 2016 Andrew Barr made an election commitment to make donor registration simpler and reach a 90 per cent organ donation registration rate target in the capital.

That year ACT's donor registration rate was just below 23 per cent, compared to an Australian average of 33.7 per cent.

Mr Barr floated a plan for Canberrans to sign up to become an organ donor at the point they renewed their driver's licence. Reforms of this kind have not yet been realised.

However, a Justice and Community Services Directorate spokesperson said the territory government was currently developing options to achieve the higher target and better recognise and show appreciation for those who have donated organs.

"The ACT government is working with the Commonwealth, who are responsible for the national donor register, to achieve this organ donation target," she said.
