Oral health would also get a boost, with Labor promising to spend nearly $4 million to buy two more mobile dental centres.

Extra graduate nurses were the centrepiece of Labor's five-point nursing plan announced on Saturday, with an additional 12 graduates each year to take the number employed annually past the 100-mark.

The package would include 12 new nurse navigators to help support complex patients, and an extra six school nurses for public schools, more than doubling the current four.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the plans would help attract, retain and support the ACT's nursing workforce.

"It will offer diversity in new roles and provide for on the job training for students with more chance of securing employment in Canberra," he said.

"Canberra's nurses will be easier to access and better trained than ever before because of this investment."

Mr Barr continued Labor's dismissive attitude to the Liberals' plan to build to small hospitals in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong.

"Nurses will want to work in Canberra under Labor because we're offering state-of-art upgrades to our health infrastructure – not pretend hospitals."

The Australian Medical Australian's ACT president, Steve Robson, has backed the mini hospitals, which would each have 22 beds.

The announcement of two more dental vans follows the success of the ACT's first mobile centre last year, with nearly 1200 diagnostic, preventative or restorative dental services offered since January alone.

More than 330 aged care facility residents have been helped by the mobile centre, with services also offered to special schools, UnitingCare's homeless-support early morning centre and other vulnerable communities.

More than 50 per cent of Australians aged 65 and older live with gum disease or periodontitis.

The new vans, which would be equipped with a dental chair, X-rays, a mobile hoist and all-electronic patient records, would be operational by the end of 2018.

With both major parties spending big on their health policies, Mr Barr, echoing the Unions ACT ad, said a Liberal ACT government would have to sack nurses, as state Liberal governments had done, to pay for their election promises.

As reported on Saturday, the Labor nurses plan includes a $2.55 million training package that would establish a masters degree nursing course at the University of Canberra, a qualification currently unavailable in the ACT.

The 68 new nurses would be in addition to the 48 extra nurses Labor promised to deliver over four years as part of an expansion of the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children announced on Friday.

The Liberals have promised to provide 52 new nurses if they win government.
