Labor's Chris Steel, Bec Cody among new faces in Assembly after ACT election

But while the final results of the ACT election won't be known until at least next Saturday, already some new faces are looking more likely that others to gain a seat in the Legislative Assembly.

Labor's Chris Steel and Bec Cody appeared poised to take seats in the Murrumbidgee electorate as counting continued on Sunday.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the new faces represented an opportunity for "renewal" in the Assembly.

He said he would consider leaving a spot vacant in the ministry for a new MLA to take up once he or she had "learnt the ropes".

"We have seven ministers at the moment, Simon Corbell is retiring so there are already vacancies and we can consider the size of the ministry in time over the coming weeks and obviously pending discussions with the Greens as well," Mr Barr said.

"If there's an opportunity now for some new people to learn the ropes in the Assembly I am considering in terms of the number of ministers being able to leave a position vacant and bring someone in later on once they've had that experience so all of those options are available."

While Labor looks set to secure an historic fifth term in government, it also seemed likely to lose incumbents Jayson Hinder and Chris Bourke in Ginninderra.

While Mr Barr said it was "too early to call that yet", he acknowledged on the basis of votes counted so far, the pair would miss out on a seat.

"But that's only a quarter of the vote. Incumbents tend to do a bit better in preference flows so we won't make that call yet but we're certainly confident in winning three seats so both of those guys are still in the mix," Mr Barr said.

Lifelong southsider Chris Steel said he was looking forward to working alongside the more experienced Labor MLAs if he should secure a seat in the Assembly.

Mr Steel studied law at the Australian National University and has worked for the ACT and federal governments as a policy adviser on education, early childhood, community services and youth policy.

At 30 years old, Mr Steel would be one of the youngest members of the Legislative Assembly if elected.

"We lost Simon Corbell who retired at the election and that was a huge challenge for us for Murrumbidgee, we had no sitting Labor members in the seat but it will mean a couple of fresh faces and an opportunity to refresh and renew the Labor team," Mr Steel said.

Former hairdresser Bec Cody said she had been blown away by the support she had received in the election.

"I was trying to speak to as many people as I could and listen to what they had to say and it's just amazing the support they've given me, I'd like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement," Ms Cody said.

Before standing for election, she operated her own salon and worked as a unionist and a political staffer. She described herself as a "pretty regular sort of person".

"I still do my groceries and try to keep my house clean and look after my two boys," she said.
