Mr Jones settled his dispute with the Brumbies over his dismissal last month.

But he pushed ahead with his case against the University of Canberra and others, alleging they pressured the board to stand him down for blowing the whistle on financial irregularities with the sale of land in Griffith.

The KPMG report at the centre of the angst remains under a suppression order by Justice Richard Refshauge and part of an ongoing AFP investigation.

It's understood to detail transactions at the Brumbies between 2009 and 2013 relating to the sale of the club's former Griffith headquarters and subsequent move to the University of Canberra.

Mr Lamont's lawyer Jack Pappas appeared in the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday in an attempt to subpoena eight people and groups for emails or other documents that showed Mr Jones disseminated the KPMG report, either directly or indirectly.

He argued there were reasons - including the appearance of details of the report in newspaper stories - to suspect the litigation by Mr Jones was being carried out for some ulterior purpose, and could represent an abuse of process.

Mr Jones' lawyer Rory Markham said this was the first time he had heard in court what amounted to claims of politicking and "poli-litigating" against his client.

Among those Mr Pappas attempted to subpoena were Canberra Times journalists, The Australian newspaper journalists, the leader of the opposition and the opposing lawyers representing Mr Jones and the Brumbies board.

The Australian recently published details of what it alleges the report contains.

After submissions from opposing lawyers, and after Justice Refshauge suggested the scope of the subpoenas was so wide as to constitute a "fishing expedition", Mr Pappas agreed to narrow their scope.

He is due to appear before court on Wednesday with the amended subpoenas for Justice Refshauge to decide whether to give leave to issue them.
