The former St Edmund's College student already has a Logie under his belt, taking home the one for Most Outstanding Actor for his role in The Society Murders in 2006.

This time he is competing for the Logie for Most Popular Actor with his Offspring co-star Lachy Hulme and he told us there had already been some friendly banter on set.

Le Nevez said he was really just looking forward to celebrating the show with mates on the night, adding the Logies were ''a bit weird''.

Former Belconnen public servant Adam Giles, sworn in this week as the new chief minister of the Northern Territory, may have his looks as well as his political nous to thank for knocking off the former leader Terry Mills.

Giles, who took over the reins of the Country Liberal Party while Mills was overseas, was also the Liberal candidate for the ACT seat of Fraser at the 2004 election.

A fascinating study at the time asked an independent group to assess the looks of 286 major party candidates who ran in that election, finding that voters tended to opt for the better-looking candidate.

Giles ended up being ranked the second-most attractive candidate in the field. And who conducted the study? None other than now Labor MP for Fraser Andrew Leigh who at the time was an economist at the Australian National University. How the world turns.

Canberra Symphony Orchestra creative director and conductor Nicholas Milton, deserves a standing ovation after dashing from Europe - and then back again - to attend the Centenary of Canberra celebrations on Monday.

Milton conducted the Komische Oper Berlin at the opening night of Carmen in Berlin last Wednesday then hopped on a plane to arrive in Canberra late on Friday night in time for weekend rehearsals with the CSO and the centenary choir for the unveiling of the specially-commissioned Symphony No. 3. As soon as that performance was over on Monday night, Milton headed straight from the stage to a waiting car to whisk him back up the Hume to Sydney.

He then endured a 24-hour flight, 14-hour delay in connecting flights, the odd snowstorm and an unscheduled train ride to be back in Berlin 15 minutes before rehearsals for his next Carmen gig.

If you're looking for a beautiful tribute to the centenary of Canberra, look no further than the contribution of 11-year-old Chapman schoolgirl Lucy Sugerman. The enterprising year 7 student at Stromlo High School recorded a cover of the song Home by Gabrielle Aplin. The accompanying video was filmed by her parents Lynne and Michael at the National Arboretum Canberra and posted on YouTube. Lucy tells us she loves Canberra's natural beauty. ''It's not like a big city that's really busy. It's peaceful. And even though it doesn't have a beach, there's still lots of things to do,'' she said.

Patrons viewing the award-winning documentary Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea at the Spiegeltent in Canberra on Saturday, starting 2pm, might like to bring a toy or book.

Seven-year-old Persephone Bates d'Arbela, the daughter of David and Michele Bates, who produced the Famous Spiegel Garden, has set up a basket to collect toys and books for the children of asylum seekers.

Persephone was the catalyst for the film being shown at the Spiegeltent. She was already concerned about the children of asylum seekers and when her father saw that the documentary was on a national tour, asked that it appear at the Spiegeltent.
