Legal aid services hung out to dry

Legal aid is a little like emergency medical treatment: we'd prefer not to have to ask for it, but we hope and expect that it's available when we need it. The trouble is that easy access to legal representation regardless of one's financial circumstances (the provision of which is enshrined in Commonwealth and state law) is being steadily eroded by a combination of increased demand for legal advice, the rising real costs of legal representation and the reluctance of governments to meet the shortfall. Indeed, in some circumstances, governments have trimmed their contributions substantially.
