Letters to the Editor: Dreaming of a global tariff war

Nancy Tidfy (Letters, March19), is correct in saying that Australia's golden years, when we had full employment, low inflation, affordable housing, strong unions and good working conditions, began when equal pay for the sexes was introduced and ended after Whitlam foolishly reduced tariffs by 25 per cent. I know because I worked in that era and life was sweet. Whitlam had obviously never heard the adage, "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"
