Letters to the Editor: Exploiting animals for profit is hardly friendly

Errol Good (Letters, July 6) has an interesting view of the world if he thinks greyhound racing, horse racing and harness racing encourage us to "enjoy our animal friends with kindness, enjoyment and pleasure". He asks why he should support the ban on greyhound racing. Because it is not possible for any of these racing industries to ever "clean up their acts". Even if the horrors of live animal baiting in the greyhound industry (a practice that is generations old) could be stamped out, racing animals are not bred for love. They are bred for profit. Profit for owners, profit for gamblers. No profit, no industry. And profit always trumps animal welfare. Caring ends when profitability ends. Dogs and horses that are injured and can't be rehabilitated, those that too slow, those that are too old, those that cost more than they make, are disposed of, ie killed, in their thousands because they don't pay their way. I wonder if Mr Good would like the same treatment meted out to other of his "friends". I suggest a better way to show our kindness towards other animals is to not exploit them for human greed, gain and supposed enjoyment. Their lives are not ours to own, their bodies are not ours to abuse.
