Some above ground power lines and street lighting also impacted from July 2016.
The government's environmental impact statement for the light rail project warn utilities around Northbourne Avenue, Flemington Road and Federal Highway have a substantial overlap with the route.
Water supply mains, sewers, stormwater drains, gas mains and telecommunications infrastructure are present in the area and relocation works will have to involve utilities companies.
The massive report, released by the Capital Metro Agency this month, is considered by officials as a worst-case scenario risk assessment for the $783 million project.
Studies of pipes and wires around the route's 12 kilometre footprint have been ongoing since February last year.
"Construction within the median of the Federal Highway [and] Northbourne Avenue between Flemington Road... requires the relocation of a major gas main," the report said.
"Detailed consideration would be given to the design development and execution of the gas main relocation to ensure it is conducted safely and efficiently."
Ahead of the launch of a campaign supporting construction jobs created by the light rail project, Unions ACT said an independent assessment it commissioned confirmed the government's forecasts were accurate.
The assessment, by Macquarie University workforce research assistant Sasha Holley, found light rail would helpCanberra economy.
Dr Holley said the project "will see the Canberra economy expand and diversify as knowledge workers move into the attractive, connected and convenient Gungahlin corridor, and less skilled workers follow to provide support services (including restaurants, entertainment and other services) for the new knowledge economy".
Unions ACT secretary Alex White welcomed the assessment of existing reports and the business case already in the public domain to examine the credibility of their economic and employment claims.
"This independent assessment has looked at the claims made about light rail with a critical eye," Mr White said.
"Simply put, the figure of 3500 jobs during the construction phase and thousands of further jobs resulting from is credible and probably conservative."
"What this independent assessment confirms is that light rail will stimulate significant job creation in the private sector, and help diversify our economy."
The Liberal opposition has rubbished the job creation claims and called for the government to delay signing contracts until after the October 2016 election.
The environmental impact statement said construction of the 12 kilometre line would see average employment of 500 people, up to 900 at peak times.
The project's business case released in October said light rail would create 1450 "direct jobs" with a peak of 1780 positions.
The business case, and an employment analysis report commissioned by the government, also forecasts 2100 "indirect jobs".
There will be 125 ongoing jobs once the tram line is operational in 2019.
