Litbits June 10 2017

The Writer-in-Residence program is an initiative of the ACT Writers Centre in close collaboration with UNSW Canberra and supported by the Copyright Agency Ltd. It seeks to bring to Canberra writers of national and international stature who would not otherwise be able to access the state's resources.

The writers have access to the facilities of UNSW Canberra and are encouraged to engage with students and researchers on campus. Writers are accommodated at the Gorman Arts Centre for one month and immersed in the broader creative community through the ACT Writers Centre.

Entries for the 2017 Australian Catholic University Prize for Poetry are open until July 3, with a $10,000 first prize for poetry with the theme "Joy". See: acu.edu.au/poetry-prize.

June 11: Writer, performer and artist Kim Mahood will talk about her work exploring the fault lines between black and white relations in Australia and her memoir Position Doubtful with the ABC's Louise Maher at Muse Canberra at 3pm. Admission $10 includes a drink. musecanberra.com.au.

June 15: A Bloomsday event to honour James Joyce's novel Ulysses will be held at the Irish Club, 6 Parkinson Street, Weston, at 6.30pm. Readings from the novel will be interspersed with Irish songs and music, as well as a two-course dinner. Bookings ($40 per head): 6288 5088 or irish.club.com.au.

June 20: At 6pm in the Conference Room, Level 4, National Gallery of Australia, Professor John Maynard, Professor Victoria Haskins and National Library curator Matthew Jones will explore the first contact of Indigenous people and the Europeans they adopted into their families. $20 includes refreshments and book signing. nla.gov.au.

June 27: In Conversation: Capital Ideas at 6pm in the National Library of Australia Theatre, Lower Ground 1, is a panel discussion on someof Australia's key policy issues,presented by the National Library of Australia and the Grattan Institute. Free. Bookings: nla.gov.au.
