It may come as a surprise to some, but Fyshwick and Mitchell have been included in a list of Canberra's top five most active suburbs for online dating compiled by match making site eHarmony.

While these suburbs might seem like odd inclusions (or, perhaps, ironically appropriate ones), eHarmony has told The Canberra Times that the survey is actually based on census data by postcode, not strictly by suburb, putting the population of Fyshwick at 899 and Mitchell's at an even smaller 573.

And it is not only these two suburbs getting a piece of the action. The ACT tops eHarmony's national list of love-seekers, with singles in the territory 33 per cent more likely to be searching for that special someone.

"All of our users when they sign up to eHarmony they put in their location ... we collected that data and we came out with that Canberra is the number one place to find love in Australia," said eHarmony spokeswoman Sarah Mason.

Vying for the title of love state was Queensland, with its population 16 per cent more likely to be looking for love than the national average.

Meantime, love was the last thing on Northern Territorians' minds, where people were 73 per cent less likely to be seeking out their next partner.

Ms Mason said the dating scene in Canberra has come a long way since 2010. Just two years ago, the ACT was 8 per cent below the national average of interested singles.

"Canberra has really come into its own it used to be very much just a public service town now fast forward five years and it's fresh, young and exciting," she said.

Ms Mason explained that she believes the demographic of Canberra is shifting to an environment of professional singles with higher disposable income and this can only help with the basic human desire to find love.

"No matter where you are in the world people want to find love," she said.

Topping the list of Canberra's love hunting postcodes is the university suburb of Acton.

"It doesn't surprise me that Acton is the number one suburb to find love in Canberra ... It is in the city full of single professionals as well as students who are a part of the technology savvy generation," Ms Mason said.

Ms Mason believes that it is only natural that people are turning to online dating.

"We now do everything online, just this morning I have e-mailed my sister, done my banking, checked Facebook and Twitter it makes sense that people are going online for love."
