Canberra's magistrates are seeking a $39,000 pay rise, while the Master of the ACT Supreme Court wants a new formula to determine his salary which would deliver him an extra $29,000 next year.

The judicial officers have sought the salary increases in submissions to the ACT Remuneration Tribunal.
University of Canberra chancellor John Mackay has also requested approval for a big increase in payments to members of the university's governing council.
In her submission to the tribunal, ACT Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said magistrates' pay should be set at 80 per cent of what Supreme Court justices earned.
The salaries of judges recently rose from $402,880 to $412,550. Using the 80 per cent benchmark, magistrates' salaries would climb from $290,958 to $330,040.
Ms Walker said the pay increase was justified partly because the ACT Magistrates Court had similar responsibilities to state district and county courts.
"The ACT jurisdiction is not only greater than any other, it is very much greater compared to some,'' Ms Walker wrote.
"Note, for example, that a civil jurisdictional limit in the ACT is 2½ times that of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria, a little over three times that of Western Australia and five times that of Tasmania.''
Supreme Court Master David Mossop backed a proposal by his predecessor David Harper for the master's salary to be set at 85 per cent of that of a Supreme Court judge.
The University of Canberra argued that members of its council should be paid a similar amount to members of other university governing bodies.
Mr Mackay said the average payment to directors of boards in the not-for-profit education sector was $29,000.
But UC councillors were only paid $3800 a year.
"It should also be noted that UC remunerates council members. Therefore, any decision by the tribunal to increase the rates paid to council members will not impact the ACT budget,'' Mr Mackay said.
The ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body has also sought pay increases for its members to help them manage growing workloads.
The organisation's chair, Rod Little, said members were sometimes forced to take leave without pay from other jobs to ensure they could fulfil their duties.
"Currently Elected Body where members whose primary source of income is full-time employment elsewhere, it is challenging or inequitable at times to contribute effectively to Elected Body work, especially where they are generally required to take leave without pay,'' Mr Little said.
"This work would be enhanced if the remuneration for the chairperson was increased to a full-time position, a separate deputy chair's remuneration to a figure between that of the chair and that of a member and the member's remuneration increase to support the additional work expected of the Elected Body.''
In June, the Remuneration Tribunal temporarily froze the pay of ACT Legislative Assembly members.
The pay freeze will remain in place while a consultant reviews MLAs' salaries, entitlements and allowances.
