About 10pm, police were called to reports of shots fired near Freda Gibson Circuit in Theodore.

Arriving at the scene, they learnt a man with a gunshot wound had sought help nearby.

The man was treated and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"ACT Policing...identified several crime scenes which were later examined by AFP Forensic Services," a police spokesman said.

Police did not provide further detail on Sunday but multiple witnesses reported seeing officers descend on a house overnight after an altercation between a number of men ended in gun shots.

One man who lives on the street but did not wish to be named said he was out in his backyard when he heard arguing and then the crack of a gunshot, followed by about five more shots in quick succession moments later.

"The guys ran back up the road; there was blood all down the street," he said.

"It was terrifying. I'm still shaken up."

Police set up spotlights and blocked off sections of the street as they investigated into the early hours, he said.

Along with a trail of blood, it is understood shotgun shells were also found nearby.

Some residents reported police and ambulance crews had been called out to the street a number of times in recent years. In October 2016, it was the scene of another shooting but it is unclear if any of the incidents are connected.

Police are urging anyone with information, footage or who saw anything suspicious in Theodore or Calwell between 9.45 and 10pm on Saturday to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
