Canberra's winter is beginning to bite at nearly the exact same time as last year, as the mercury fell to nearly minus 5 degrees this morning.

The temperature hit a low of minus 4.7 degrees at the airport about 2.40am, the coldest it's been in Canberra since September last year.
But while it isn't officially winter just yet, the weather bureau's senior meteorologist Sean Carson said the ACT actually had a very similar cold snap at exactly the same time last year.
"On this same week last year, we had two consecutive minus 7 [degree mornings]," Mr Carson said.
Perisher took full advantage of the cold weather over the weekend, kicking off snowmaking operations to supplement the natural snow that fell yesterday.
The mountains were blanketed with a light dusting of snow, as temperatures fell as low as minus 5 degrees.
And it won't just be the mountains shivering through the cold this week. With clear skies sitting over the capital for the next few days, Mr Carson said we can expect similar frosty starts for a few mornings yet.
"A high pressure system will dominate through the week, so there'll be very little change in the weather," Mr Carson said, predicting temperatures will easily slip as low as minus 4 degrees over the coming nights.
In typical Canberra fashion, Mr Carson said the cold starts through the week will actually herald some nice daytime weather, with sunny, clear skies forecast, and expected top temperatures in the mid teens.
While today's temperature had climbed to a forecast top of 13 degrees by lunchtime, tomorrow should reach 16 degrees, with sunny conditions that will persist through till the weekend.
