Using a touchscreen device, the new system gives customers the opportunity to create their own burger by selecting the bun, cheese, salad, sauce and extras. Initially only Angus beef patties are available, but a chicken option will be added in the coming months.

As well as standard McDonald's burger ingredients, you can also choose from new additions including grilled pineapple, beetroot, tortilla chips, grilled mushroom, chipotle mayo and shaved parmesan.

There is also an option for a lettuce leaf instead of a bun – sometimes known as a naked burger – for the more health conscious.

Gold Creek McDonald's owner Hani Sidaros said the system gave customers a new dining experience and control over what they ate.

"Apparently they tell me that this combines into about 2 million different combinations, so there's a lot there for the customers to have a go at," he said.

But Sidaros suggests users show some restraint when adding ingredients.

"I made that mistake when we first did it. I wanted to test my staff so I put everything I could on there – it didn't taste very nice. You can't put five different sauces on a burger and think it's going to taste good," he said.

Once customers have created their burger they pay at the device or at the counter, and then the meal is served at the table on a wooden board with chips in a mini deep-frying basket, reminiscent of a cafe.

The Create Your Taste menu is available at around 30 stores in Australia, and is expected to be rolled out to 700 stores Australia-wide by the end of June, including more in Canberra.

It will also be expanded in the future to incorporate more of the McDonald's menu.

"The next part of the launch is a Create Your Taste salads menu, so that's very exciting. After that will be Create Your Taste desserts and Create Your Taste breakfasts," said Sidaros.
