WorkSafe ACT has slapped Canberra Metro with prohibition and improvement notices after a major gas line was ruptured during excavation at the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Ipima Street.

Thirteen notices have now been served on the agency since November, including five prohibition notices, four improvement notices and four infringements totalling $14,400.

WorkSafe ordered Canberra Metro to review its emergency management procedures after this latest incident, which closed Northbourne Avenue in both directions for about an hour-and-a-half last Friday afternoon.

ACT Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones said he was "satisfied" the revised procedures addressed their initial concerns.

"However we have stressed the importance of translating these procedures into better practices in the field," Mr Jones said.

He noted the project was "complex", and said WorkSafe's three dedicated light rail inspectors continued to watch the project closely.

The incident is one of three recent shutdowns which have affected construction on stage one of Canberra's light rail network.

On November 24, fire broke out when a generator was filled with petrol close to the grinding of a metal track weld. The small fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

On December 7, contractors were barred from using hydro vacuum excavation after an electrical shock.

The contractor was also issued an improvement notice on November 29 for failing to keep the site properly secured.

Another improvement notice was issued on December 4 after excavators struck an electrical utility. WorkSafe ordered Canberra Metro to revise its procedures so as to not disturb incident sites until an inspector arrives.

Construction is due to finish on the project by the end of this year.
