At first glance, it might look like a series of careless splashes or absent-minded brushstrokes. A riot of colour, and perhaps some whimsy below the surface, but surely nothing more. But a second glance at one of Michael Taylor's large-scale abstract canvases – and there will always be a second glance – will be both rewarding and revelatory. Layers of colour and texture, dense and atmospheric, his works encourage contemplation, both in terms of what they represent – frequently landscapes – and the sensations they evoke.
