Emergency services personnel used the jaws of life to free the two people who have been rushed to Canberra Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
The woman, believed to be in her 20s, is in a serious condition with multiple injuries. The man, in his 50s, is in a stable condition with abdominal injuries.
The accident occurred shortly before 1pm on Mirrabei Drive in Ngunnawal. The road remains closed to traffic with police encouraging motorists to avoid the area.
"Both vehicles are stuck on the road so the lanes are blocked in both directions," a spokeswoman said. "It's going to be quite some time until that road is open as tow trucks will need to attend."
Two fire crews, a commander and two ambulances attended the crash scene.
More to come.
