Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said a Labor Government would open 72 new beds over four years, including 40 general inpatient beds, six intensive care beds and additional emergency department, hospital in the home and medi-hotel beds.

Today's announcement follows Labor's recent promise to fund 70 new beds at Calvary Hospital and is part of a broader plan to provide 170 new beds, and about 500 new doctors and nurses, across the hospital system.

Ms Gallagher said opening new beds at the Canberra Hospital would require building work and there would be further announcements before the election in relation to capital spending.

The Health Minister said today's pledge, to be funded from unallocated funds in the forward estimates, was "all part of meeting the demand we're seeing for extra capacity across the hospital."

"This funding will fund the operation of those beds, so it really goes into extra doctors and nurses to staff the beds across the hospital system," she said.

"We've put some money aside in the forward estimates for health, so it's like a savings account where we've deposited money, it hasn't yet been allocated.

"This is allocating the money."
