The chief executive said they still had associations of being enforcement officers following doping scandals at the Essendon Bombers and Cronulla Sharks.

"There's the perception that ASADA is just a testing agency, and we want to change that," Mr Sharpe told the Sunday Canberra Times.

"We've worked hard to turn that around."

To do that, the authority has moved away from its own officers running anti-doping education programs and instead turned to an unlikely group of teachers: athletes themselves.

Mr Sharpe said despite all the information available to athletes, they're more likely than ever to be doping without knowing about it.

He said a key focus of the presentations was on the use of supplements readily available over the counter, many used by teenagers.

"You're more likely to dope and not even know it," he said.

"One in five supplements you can buy off the shelf has an illegal substance in it under the World Anti-Doping Agency code.

"Performance-enhancing drugs aren't just for sport but for image. A 17-year-old might want to build up their body ahead of the school formal, and that has major health impacts."

Former and current Olympic athletes have been recruited by the authority to act as ambassadors, leading education programs for school students and up-and-coming athletes, right up to elite training squads.

The athletes, including three-time Olympic basketballer Rachel Sporn, Olympic discus thrower Julian Wruck and elite canoeist Noemie Fox, were trained as educators in a three-day course at the authority's Fyshwick headquarters.

Ms Sporn, who won two silver medals and a bronze with the Opals between 1996 and 2004, said younger athletes were more likely to respond to other athletes.

"It brings much better engagement, and a lot of us have been there and done that, so we know what the athletes are going through," Ms Sporn said.

"We're predominantly going to up-and-coming athletes to instil the anti-doping message at a young age and set them on the right path before they reach peak level."

The Olympic basketballer said she would draw on her own experience of being drug tested multiple times in her presentation to athletes.

However, she said much had changed when it came to anti-doping since her retirement.

"When I came through as an athlete, there was no internet, and so much has changed because of online platforms," Ms Sporn said.

"There's now less of an excuse if you get caught doping because there's now all this information online."

Ms Sporn said she was looking forward to educating a new generation of potential Olympic athletes.

"I grew up with the role mode of Raelene Boyle and how she was clean athlete going up against East Germans in the 1970s," she said.

"I wanted to be that for young basketballers and I wanted to stay involved."

The authority's director of education and innovation, Alexis Cooper, said the education program underwent an overhaul to make it more appealing to young athletes.

She said in the past presentations were dry and boring.

"We wanted to make it more interactive and exciting, and people are more likely to listen to their peers."

Since the education program change at the beginning of the year, more than 80 sessions have been carried out compared to 40 held in all of 2018.
