The work will address accessibility and safety to keep the kit up to standards, and sections of ageing equipment will be replaced or repaired.
Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury said the work should be done by the end of June and will cost $170,000 and be paid for by existing government funding.
Playgrounds in the inner north, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Woden are among those that will be upgraded.
The playgrounds closed for between a few hours and a few days at a time, and there will be workmen on the sites.
"The works have been programmed to coincide with the end of the school holidays to minimise inconvenience to the public," Mr Rattenbury said.
"The ACT government is committed to helping the community lead healthy, active lives. Ensuring our playgrounds are safe for children is an important way to enable them to seek out places to play with their siblings and friends."
