Hidden gem? Sheppard's Lookout one of my favourite places in Canberra, and it's basically my backyard in West Belconnen. When people talk about Canberra being the Bush Capital, a quick trip up to the Lookout proves why.
Weekend haunt? My very exciting weekend haunt these days is a 7pm basketball match that alternates between Belconnen and Tuggeranong. My son is playing and his team has been gifted such a great time slot! Myself and the other parents are there on the sidelines for a weekly catch up and to cheer on the team... I'm secretly hoping that next season's time slot it a bit more favourable.
Place to take visitors? As the Minister for Sport and Recreation, I'm pretty passionate about some of the great teams we have in Canberra, so if someone was visiting from out of town, I think I'd insist they join me at a Caps Game, or Canberra United in summer. In winter it would be to see CBR Brave.
People watching spot? Definitely Belco skate park! Love it there. Watching kids learn to skate. Seeing some of the older kids and even adults, who know their stuff – and can really shred it! Then of course there are the other parents – and everyone is trying to act cool.
Place to unwind? In summer, I'd say Lake G, on a good day. Great place to take a picnic, hang out, have a swim out to the pontoon and back.
Treat? I spend a lot of time in my own community and all over town, I to go to a lot of events where it's a real privilege to meet and chat to so many amazing Canberrans. In saying that, I have to confess that it is a real treat to have a night at home on occasion. I can spend time with my dog, Cassie and all the other animals around the house, our two chooks and our recent addition of two guinea pigs! It's not that exciting, and I'd probably end up doing the washing!! But I do rate a night in as a real treat.
