The public will be able to have their say on Belconnen's future development, with the community consultation to consider various issues including building heights, pedestrian and cycle connections, car parking and the future use of the former Joynton Smith busway.

ACT Planning Minister Mick Gentleman said the master plan would build on work by the Belconnen Community Council and other community groups before the development of the draft master plan.

"Following the 2001 Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan, the centre has undergone considerable growth and change through a number of developments in the area," he said.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to tell us how they would like Belconnen to develop now and into the future."

Mr Gentleman said the consultation would also consider opportunities to strengthen links between the town centre, the University of Canberra and other major institutions to help possible employment growth and offer more opportunities for local businesses.

The consultation, together with supporting studies, would help drive the development of a renewed master plan for Belconnen, Mr Gentleman said.

Belconnen Community Council chairwoman Robyn Coghlan said it was hoped the new master plan would deliver an improved overview of future developments for the town centre and lead to a more cohesive and user-friendly town centre.

As part of the community consultation, there were will be several consultation displays and "meet the planners" sessions until consultation finishes on January 30.
