Point-to-point cameras could earn the ACT Government more than $4 million in the first month of operations, according to statistics gathered during the testing period.

The Justice and Community Safety Directorate announced today that the cameras on Hindmarsh Drive would become operational on February 27 after their initial starting date was delayed by a lightning strike late last year.
Speed measurements taken during the testing of the point-to-point cameras indicated that approximately 800 motorists a day were speeding along the section of Hindmarsh Drive where the cameras will soon be operating.
If those drivers are captured and charged the lowest speed infringement penalty of $162, the new cameras could earn the government $129,600 in their first day.
But executive director of transport policy and regulation Karen Greenland said the aim of the cameras was not to make money but instead stop speeding drivers.
"Typically with these cameras in other locations, you do see a significant decline in speeding levels," she said.
Ms Greenland said the cameras should also help curb the significant number of fatal and serious injury crashes occurring in the capital.
"Experience from other jurisdictions that have introduced point to point cameras confirms that these systems are effective at reducing speeds and serious or fatal crashes where they are installed," she said.
A total of 538 crashes occurred on that stretch of road between 2004 and 2008.
