A series of provocative murals have been unveiled in Canberra's city centre in an effort to improve the health of the territory's waterways.

The DrainART initiative is a small part of the $93 million ACT Healthy Waterways project jointly funded by the territory and federal governments.
ACT Environment Minister Mick Gentleman said the murals aimed to remind people not to throw rubbish down stormwater drains.
"We have engaged local artists to promote the idea that we need to keep our waterways healthy," he said.
Local artists Benjamin Reeve and Delene White had been commissioned by the government to design the murals, which are dotted alongside drain openings down Civic's City Walk.
Mr Reeve's pieces incorporated pieces of trash with local animals such as pelicans and swans.
"I've tried to incorporate elements that people are familiar with, but bringing them to the project in a way that will influence change," he said.
Ms White said she had focused on the much-loved parts of Canberra that could be put at risk through pollution.
"We all know Canberra is this amazing place," she said.
"For me it was about giving a little bit of a reminder. We all know what to do to keep our environment healthy."
Other art installations have been planned for shopping centres across the ACT, as well as in Cooma, Yass and Queanbeyan.
