But there was at least one Canberra family that didn't escape yesterday's storm unscathed after a 40 metre tree fell on their home in Flynn.
Russell Stewart arrived home yesterday afternoon to find a gaping hole caused by a fallen gum tree.
The tree went through the back of the Stewart's house and cut the powerlines almost in half.
Chief officer of the ACT State Emergency Services, Tony Graham, said the SES received over 200 calls, but there was generally less severe damage than expected.
"In comparison to what might have happened we got out of it lightly," he said.
The Stewarts are currently staying in a motel in Belconnen and don't know when they'll be able go back and stay in their home again.
Mr Stewart's wife Tracy said she was thankful that nobody was home when the tree fell.
The heavy rain over catchment areas close to the coast have meant a number of road closures at low-level crossings in the ACT today.
Oaks Estate Crossing, Point Hut Crossing, Sunshine Crossing and Angle Crossing were all closed this morning as a precaution, after river levels threatened to rise over the road.
