Opposition legal affairs spokesman Jeremy Hanson on Wednesday urged the government to exempt the DPP from the Justice and Community Safety (JACS) directorate's $4.8 million, four-year savings target.

He said despite years of annual reports and committee recommendations for boosting the DPP's funding, the answer from the government had always been "no, or we'll get back to you, which is not good enough".

Mr Hansen said the lack of resources given to the DPP went beyond the total number of prosecutions, but also affected the quality of those prosecutions, a problem that "shouldn't be forced upon the people of Canberra".

While the territory government does not maintain a specific government-wide 'efficiency dividend', it expects all agencies to find efficiencies to meet its forecast budget savings targets.

Director of Public Prosecutions Jon White SC last year told an assembly committee the workload facing his office and the Supreme Court had doubled in recent years, amid more complex cases and a growing population.

Mr White said at the time that if appropriate resources were not given to his office, the standard of prosecutions would suffer.

However Mr Hanson's motion failed to gain the support of Labor and the Greens.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said he had received a report from a review into the DPP's funding, which he was still considering, and that the efficiency measures amounted to only 0.53 per cent of the office's budget.

He also said the prosecutor's office had also been given additional funding in recent years for family violence prosecutions and work safety matters, and the government would keep working with the DPP on its funding.

But he did not commit to publicly release the report on Wednesday, with a spokeswoman saying a decision on releasing would be made as part of the wider consideration of funding review.

It is unclear whether or not the government intends to increase the DPP's funding, despite Mr White labelling the funding situation as "critical" in his latest annual report.

He also told the committee that the prosecutor's office was being forced to make compromises on choosing which cases to pursue and to the level of preparation given to specific cases, due to the lack of resources.

In a motion before the assembly on Wednesday, Mr Hanson urged the government to exclude the DPP from the directorate's efficiency measures and to ensure that "all programs in this area be maintained or expanded as required to achieve the stated policy outcome".

It follows the assembly's Estimates committee in July this year urged the government do exactly that, a recommendation the government "noted".

But the government's official response to the recommendation was that "all agencies are expected to continue to identify efficiencies in their operations".

Mr Hanson also urged the government to directly ask the DPP what resources it needed to attract and retain senior prosecutors and give the Office power to table an independent annual report, rather than a short version as part of the wider JACS annual report.

The government instead agreed to work with the DPP to consider its future funding and that of the justice system more broadly.
