A Canberra teacher whose father was shot dead outside NSW Police headquarters on Friday has remembered his father as a kind and gentle man.

Alpha Cheng, an associate with Teach For Australia at the Caroline Chisholm school, thanked the community for their outpouring of well wishes and blessings after 15-year-old Farhad Khalil Mohammad Jabar shot dead his police accountant father, Curtis Cheng, 58, from behind and at close range.
In a statement, Mr Cheng said a visit from NSW premier Mike Baird and NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione was a "comforting reminder of the warm regard that was held for [his father], especially by the New South Wales police community".
"My father was a kind, gentle, and loving person. He was humourous, generous of heart and always put the family first. He has set a tremendous example for us as a family," Mr Cheng said.
"We are deeply saddened and heartbroken that he has been taken from us, but we are truly grateful for the fruitful and happy life he has shared with us."
The chief police officer for the ACT, Assistant Commissioner Rudi Lammers, expressed sympathy for the Cheng family on Twitter.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Curtis Cheng, long-time NSW Police Service employee," he said.
