Sony set up a stall at Westfield Belconnen on Saturday and Sunday for players to trial their Playstation VR equipment, almost three weeks before the gear is available on the market.

The stall gave gamers the chance to experience a simulated world through the new helmet and headphones headset.

Four games were on offer to trial, including the simulation of a shootout on a highway after a bank heist, and a racing car complete with steering wheel and seat.

The simulation that drew the strongest reaction, however, involved players take on the role of a diver sitting in a shark tank in deep, dark water.

Daniel Sharp, from Kaleen, said the immersive nature of the technology drew him in, even if the sight of a shark trying to bite through steel bars was not the most relaxing way to spend a weekend.

"I've done similar sort of things, but not animated like that," he said.

"They're getting better all the time, it's definitely going to be the way of the future for gaming, given the immersion."

Fourteen-year-old Josh Moody, meanwhile, said he was looking forward to getting the virtual reality set after trying out the racing game.

"When I went into the game, I forgot about the helmet and the headphones; it was really realistic," he said.

"As you move your hand, it moves in the game and I really liked how it felt like you were there."

The trial of the Playstation VR technology will continue at Westfield Belconnen on Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
