PNG's success unequalled in western Melanesia

The celebrations in Port Moresby marking Papua New Guinea's 40th year of independence on Wednesday attracted little attention in Australia, the media being otherwise occupied by Malcolm Turnbull's accession to the prime ministership. It was an anniversary that deserved greater attention and contemplation, for PNG's transition from colony to mature nationhood under Australian tutelage has been a success story largely unequalled in western Melanesia.
