Police have condemned the "deplorable" antics of some holiday motorists after they nabbed one man allegedly guzzling a beer behind the wheel, and caught another one driving more than 40km/h above the legal limit.

They were among a string of disturbing incidents recorded on NSW roads around Canberra and the south coast as drivers hit the roads after Christmas.
The state's police force will target motorists who do the wrong thing during the festive season through Operation Safe Arrival, which runs until midnight on Sunday, January 4.
Territory police have also boosted traffic patrols on Canberra region roads for the holiday period and will target drunk and intoxicated drivers.
NSW Police officers stopped a man, 45, driving in Lamont Street, Bermagui, after he was allegedly seen drinking a beer behind the wheel just before midnight on Saturday.
The man, who police said had been unlicensed since 2003, was issued with a court attendance notice for February.
A Wamboin man, 38, was charged with mid-range drink-driving after police stopped him for a random breath test in Bungendore Road.
He blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.144 and will face Queanbeyan Local Court in February.
Also caught on Saturday was a man, 31, who allegedly tested positive to cannabis when police stopped his car for a random drug test in Bourke Street in Goulburn.
He was banned from driving for 24 hours.
Police stopped a 20-year-old man on the Hume Highway after he was allegedly clocked at 136km/h in a 90km/h zone on the Hume Highway at Mittagong.
The P-plate driver was given a court attendance notice and his licence was suspended.
It comes after police nabbed five drivers for a rash of offences, including speeding, drug-driving and driving unlicensed, in separate incidents on Goulburn roads on Boxing Day.
NSW Police said they caught 966 speeding motorists on Saturday, up from 763 on the same day last year.
However, they said the number of drink drivers caught on the same day in 2013 had dropped 80 per cent.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander John Hartley was pleased with the fall in drunk drivers, but said there were still far too many motorists who put lives at risk with their "reckless road behaviour".
"While the vast majority people using our roads do so safely and responsibly, we continue to be dismayed by the small number of reckless drivers who seem intent on destruction," Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.
"It beggars belief that some of those arrested yesterday are still alive. Their antics are absolutely deplorable."
Heavy traffic on the Kings Highway on Saturday as Canberrans made their annual pilgrimage to the south coast had eased by Sunday afternoon.
