Private Capital: Artist Benjamin Shine's sculpture for his Canberra wedding

Canberra-based artist Benjamin Shine created the ribbon sculpture Entwined featuring the faces of himself and his bride Danielle Stone for their wedding, which took place a few weeks ago.

At the ceremony, which was held at Summerlees in Sutton Forest, the sculpture took the form of two floating ribbons, which meandered around trees and over branches to finally create the wedding arch, and helped to lead guests to their seats.

British-born artist and designer Benjamin developed the piece from his tulle fabric work, in which he pleats a single length of tulle netting fabric with an iron. For Entwined, he used folded ribbons of metal mesh.

The gorgeous final product involved an impressed four kilometres of the metal mesh, which was then powder-coated in white.

And you can expect to see more of Benjamin's work around town, because from mid-April the Canberra Centre will display an exhibition of his tulle portraits and sculptures outside the David Jones entrance, near Laura Ashley.

For anyone to do the World's Greatest Shave, which raises funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, is admirable, but in Tom Friedrich's case it's even more so.

Two years ago, after seeing his sister's friend shave her head for the cause, Tom was inspired to get involved.

"I thought it would be a good idea, so I didn't cut my hair for a couple of years," he said.

After not even a trim for two years, the big shave happened this Wednesday at Alfred Deakin High School, with his dad, Tim Friedrich, in charge of the clippers.

"It's feeling a lot cooler now," Tom said.

"It was kind of weird, everyone called me a girl. It was quite interesting experience."

Tom's mum, Katharine Murphy, said she's delighted with what her son has done.

"It really was all his idea. I was quite surprised because he was very young but he was completely implacable that he was going to do it and he never wavered from it," she said.

"It wasn't always easy for him - it is a bit embarrassing when you're a 12-year-old boy to be mistaken for a girl, and that happened quite a few times, but he was really genuinely determined to do it. He is just a superb human being."

Tom has so far raised $2,092 for the Leukaemia Foundation, and his fundraising page is open for another month.

And his luscious, long locks were collected in a ponytail, and will be donated to a wig maker, though they have not yet decided who.

Short film festival Flickerfest is coming to Canberra next week as part of its tour around the country, bringing with it a program of the festival's award-winning films.

Included in the lineup is Snowblind by Canberra born and bred filmmaker Sean Kruck, which won the Canon Award for Best Direction in an Australian Short Film at the Flickerfest awards night back in January.

"It's a 15-minute film just with a very simple narrative that's based on a weekend of a teenage boy", said Sean.

The former Melrose High School student lived in Canberra until he was 18, before travelling the world and then settling in Sydney.

He's currently working on his first feature film, in between juggling commercial and television work, which has included working on a few episodes of Puberty Blues.

When looking for a location to shoot Snowblind, Sean initially looked to Canberra.

"I was looking for locations with a country, timeless feel to it, so I initially did look around Canberra, but there's been a lot of development the last few years," he said.

"We found a house in Cooma with a '70s kind of feel and also it was on a property so it kind of allowed us to control the time period a lot more."

While he now lives in Sydney, Sean is looking forward to his creation travelling around the country on the Flickerfest tour.

"What I like is it does go to places like Canberra and Cooma and people I know and grew up with, it gives them an opportunity to go along and see them," he said.

"That's the only way short films find an audience - through these festivals - so it's good to see them get out of the big major cities and travel."

Kicking off on March 21 is a unique exhibition by Designcraft combining fashion and furniture.

Titled Who Is, the exhibition showcases pieces from Propaganda, a new collection by Canberra fashion label Corr Blimey, plus furniture from German residential furniture company Walter Knoll.

Louisa de Smet, who runs Corr Blimey with Steven Wright, said it's a collaboration that makes sense.

"One of the reasons we were approached was we're very inspired by German design, and Walter Knoll wanted someone who understood the influence," she said.

"It was such a source of great inspiration, so why not create our new collection around the furniture?"

The exhibition features the first part of Corr Blimey's new collection, while the rest of it will be saved up for a reveal at FashFest from May 13-16.

In creating the collection, Louisa looked at the furniture pieces from every angle, and was even inspired to think differently when it came to materials.

"We've explored materials that wouldn't traditionally be used in apparel," she said.

"We've revisited felt, but we actually used much denser, more rigid felt, something that would be used in a more commercial sense. And we played with adapting these fabrics into garments."

The pieces will be on display on mannequins placed among Walter Knoll furniture, and unlike other exhibitions, there will be no prohibition on touching the displays.

"The garments are available to order and I'm happy to invite people in to try garments on," she said.

Louisa will also be on site at the exhibition on March 26 from 4pm to 6pm talk about the collection.
