Residents were curious and alert. But they were not alarmed.
Young Ben walked on a footpath next to the river as water lapped the edge, splashing in puddles as he went.
''We have to come down and look at how the river has changed every day,'' his mum Michelle Cleary of nearby Oaks Estate said.
''The water's now looking like it's coming very close.''
The caravan park overlooking the swollen river advised residents to evacuate earlier this past week but now has people returning to their abodes, despite the second round of rain, according to one employee.
A little more than a year ago large sections of the caravan park went underwater. Last night anybody near the Queanbeyan and Molonglo rivers was still officially on flood watch, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Last night the bureau forecast further rain for the next 24 to 48 hours which could cause renewed river rises.
''The situation is being closely monitored and revised warnings will be issued as required,'' the latest update advised.
Queanbeyan State Emergency Service spokesman Mitchell Clout said SES volunteers would be rostered on at the local headquarters until tonight.
He said the evacuation alert had yet to be lifted because of the latest hit of rain.
''The people here understand what can happen to the Queanbeyan River.''
