A "Save the Queanbeyan Women's Bowling and Croquet club" Facebook page set up last week warned after 60 years of operation the clubs were "in danger of closing".

Club president Margaret Davies said since the women's club formed in 1952 it had played a vital part in the social activity of the city – a proud legacy the club would fight for.

"We have got to work harder and together with the men's club," she said.

"Without the clubs, Queanbeyan and really the whole of Canberra would feel it."

While the men's bowling club owns three of the five greens, the women's club and two greens are leased from the council.

Historically annual maintenance costs of up to $50,000 for the leased greens were covered by the men's club, but this year the women's club aimed to shoulder that financial burden themselves.

Mrs Davies said she was grateful the Queanbeyan City Council had halved the $6314 annual rent for the club and greens, but there would be a long road ahead with fund-raising.

"If we are going to stay viable we are looking at sponsors and fund-raising as an important part of keeping us open," she said.

Members have contributed to create "From Bowl to Bowl", a no fuss compilation recipe book on sale for $14.95.

It's hoped the sale of 1000 copies will generate $10,000 for the club.

"They're simple recipes because we'd all rather be playing bowls," Mrs Davies said.

"So far we have been blown away by the response and support. We want to gain more members, interest in bowls and ensure the facility will be there for the future."
