THE OPENING night of the world-record-breaking Christmas display in Forrest had an extra injection of wonder and romance, thanks to a proposal of marriage under more than 500,000 twinkling fairy lights.

In front of friends and wide-eyed members of the public, and before a backdrop of dancing lights, 26-year-old Peter Qin went down on one knee to ask for Evelin Xu's hand in the garden of the Tennyson Crescent home shortly after 8pm on Saturday. Ms Xu said yes.
Bunches of flowers were handed out by friends of the couple for people to give back to the now-engaged pair as congratulations.
Home owner David Richards said he had been warned about the proposal, so he set aside a parking space for the couple and planned to turn the music down for the moment.
It made for a special first night for the display, which has made headlines around the world for its record-breaking 502,165 multicoloured candescent decorations, and aims to raise money for SIDS and Kids ACT.
The display will continue until December 26 at 3 Tennyson Crescent, Forrest.
