Record crowds attend Googfest as Canberra braces for another hot weekend

Now in its third year, this year's Googfest was expected to be the largest in the event's short history.

An estimated 10,000 people descended on Rockley Oval to see Australian dance-music duo Sneaky Sound System headline the event, alongside indie bands Young Monks and Slow Turismo.

Opening up the festival was 15-year-old Lucy Sugarman as Canberra's own The Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers.

The event ended with a spectacular fireworks display.

Project director Malcolm Leslie said there was no better way for people to experience Googong.

"The whole community turns out to have a picnic, watch a stunning free show and enjoy the fireworks. Enjoying life with family and friends - it's what Googong is all about," Mr Leslie said.

Despite the 5pm start for the music festival, the mercury stayed well into the 30s until just after 8pm.

While the chance of rain is predicted, the temperature in Canberra on Sunday is expected to be warmer, with a maximum of 35 degrees forecasted.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was a 50 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon and evening, with the chance of a thunderstorm.

The hot weather forecast for Sunday has seen Canberra United's W-League semi-final against Melbourne City rescheduled from 2pm to 8pm due to the warm conditions.

The Rural Fire Service has issued a very-high fire warning for the ACT for Sunday, however a total fire ban has not been put in place.

RFS chief officer Joe Murphy said crews will be on standby across the capital all weekend.

"It's going to be very hot and we'll be watching the conditions very carefully," he said.

"Sunday should have very similar conditions to Saturday just with a bit of rain."
