Ten people were treated for redback spider bites in Canberra over the past 12 months, during a year with higher than average rainfall and a summer heatwave.

An ACT Health spokeswoman said 48 people came to Canberra emergency departments with suspected spider bites, 10 of whom reported the bite coming from a redback.
Bites from that species were the highest reported, with instances of wounds from other species being too low to individually specify.
Arachnologists warned of higher numbers of redbacks in the ACT back in November, with humidity, rainfall and heat contributing to helpful breeding conditions for the species.
According to the Australian Museum, only 250 reported redback bites across Australia require antivenom each year.
ACT Territory and Municipal Services recommends that anyone bitten by a redback "apply a cold pack and seek medical aid".
"If possible, the spider [dead or alive] should also be collected and taken with the patient to the hospital or doctor for correct identification," the services' website said.
"In most cases a cold pack or ice wrapped in a towel applied to the affected area to reduce the pain and swelling will be all that is required. Monitor the condition of the patient and seek immediate medical help if allergic reactions occur."
Nobody has died from redback spider bites in Australia since an antivenom was developed in 1959.
Reports of redback bites are typically higher in summer, with the spiders staying close to dry habitats near human settlements.
Their webs can usually be identified as being untidy and built in dry, rarely used spaces like stacked rubbish piles, window sills and brickwork crevices.
Apart from redbacks, commonly identified spiders in the ACT include the mouse spider, brown trap door spider, black house spiders and huntsman spiders.
Funnel web bites happen occasionally in the territory, however the spiders' main habitat is near coastal areas, prompting warnings to ensure that collections of firewood, tree stumps and fence posts brought into the ACT does not have any arachnids in it.
